Another Dance with a Disco Ball
Okay.... so, I'm sitting around chatting with my wife about how Pink Floyds "Another Brick in the Wall" was inspired when their producer at the time (Bob Ezrin) said to Gilmour "Go to a couple of clubs and listen to what's happening with disco music," in which he forced himself out and listened to loud, four-to-the-bar bass drums and stuff and thought, Gawd, awful! Then went back to the studio and tried to turn one of the [song's] parts into one of those so it would be catchy. And hence Another Brick part 2 is born.
Anyway, my wife; curious that Brick 2 takes on a disco type of beat, then asked if I could take some video of John Travolta dancing in the movie Saturday Night Fever and sync it up with the song, So here ya go.

    I fell in love with music when I was four years old, when I heard Dark Side of the Moon in 1973. It remains the finest album I've ever heard, and I have a deep love of music. I bought a saxophone when i was 30, as my first instrument. How I used to love to play over the intro to Shine On, and there's nothing like playing with other musicians on your wavelength. But I had to stop playing, jaw issues, broke my heart, I was just getting the intro to Us and Them under my fingers. Over the last few days, I've been considering buying a Yamaha FGDP-50, I'm not a drummer, but I did have a lot of fun with a Rock Band Portable Drum Kit some 20 years ago. I watched your video. And I just burst into tears with the thought that maybe one day I could do what I've just seen and heard you do. I ordered the FGDP-50 an hour or so ago. Thank you. This is my inspiration, motivation and first goal. I think I'm going to have a lot of fun. Oh, and bless you for the info in the description. I'm going to be referring to your video a lot in the future, so again, thank you.

      I have spent quite a bit of time working on this intro. Probably about 3 months in total. I was quite adamant to get it as precise to the original recording as possible. I usually have not been too picky trying to cover tunes with the various bands I've been in over the years. As a drummer, you can really get away with a lot when it comes to covering a tune. I would usually take a few hours (tops) to learn a tune to play out live. But for this tune... for this one, I had quite a determination to cover it right. The time I spent researching Roto-Tom tuning and figuring out notation, then buying more Rotos on ebay to cover all the different notes, only to find out I didn't have the best size Roto's for their given notes I was trying to achieve and had to buy even more Roto Toms (I think I have about 12 now) I really had to question myself and wonder: AM I INSANE? Though my Wife was a very good sport about it and very supportive through the whole process. I feel deep down inside she may have thought so. All that said, it is posts like these that make it all worth while. I can't express my appreciation for your post, and to know that the end result has effected someone like yourself in the way it has. It makes every minute of my time and every dime spent on this project worth it. I had to look up the FGDP as I was not familiar with it. That thing is freaking cool! I might get one myself someday. I'm sure you will master it and I would love to hear anything you put out there. Please send me a link or post it here if you ever do.

      @@Robocomofo Thank you so much for your reply and sharing your stories. Unfortunately, the FGDP-50 has a faulty battery, I'm going to get a refund. I have multiple joint issues, I was having problems reliably activating the kick pad. The actual drumming bit was good, real sense of satisfaction getting my first lesson under my fingers. The good news is that I'm still very inspired and the money I'll get back on the finger drum will be used ho other equipment. I found a really cheap MIDI over bluetooth 25 key with 4x2 pads and some 360 knobs. I will be able to use it with GarageBand on either my iPad or MacBook. I also note that eight rota tom notes are required for the Time intro....... (big grin). I then watched a video about the Alchemy Synth in GarageBand. Now having some idea of how to play with it, I had a go, just on my iPad, blew my mind some of the sounds I was generating. I didn't mention to you that I have an eight octave range MIDI wind controller (Yamaha WX-5 in blue). It was my silent sax, I didn't want to touch it because of my jaw issues. It can get power from six AAAs, so it will power a wireless MIDI dongle, therefore wireless to GarageBand. I think I have a way I can play it without giving myself issues again. I need to get the sax mouthpiece off and swap it over for the recorder type, then I could use a MIDI pedal to make up for the loss of reed expression. Can't get the damn mouthpiece off, going to have to talk with Yamaha. If you're thinking I could use the MIDI pedal as a kick drum pedal, I'm ahead of you there: I think I could still have a lot of finger (no thumbs!) drum fun on the 4x2 anyway, but the pedal would really open playing options. There was also something I could do on iPad that I couldn't on the keyboard I'm getting. I think it's a type of MIDI expression called "radiating," that requires touch sensitive keys; a pedal might substitute the effect. I am touched that you would ask for links if I post. I get insecure about my level of musical ability when I'm in the company of experienced musicians, sometimes I felt like a fraud. I was active on the local open mic night circuit, everyone was very kind to me and musicians I respected were always happy to jam with me. The thing I did have going for me was really good tone.And I was damn well better than the woman in the band The Zutons. But she looked better in a short skirt. I promise you that *when* (not if!) I'm ready to "release it", I will somehow make it happen that you see/ hear me perform the rota toms intro. If you've got a link to the tabs and/ or pad layout for a 4x2, either one or both of those would be super helpful. Thanks again.

      @@buxycat Unfortunately, I never made any tabs. I memorized the entire piece one section at a time as I thought it would be difficult to follow along to sheet music/tabs since the rotos were not set up in a conventional order. If you noticed, the highest note is the center roto on the top row and then the notes get lower as you work your way out on either side. Here is a link to another video I made where the camera is stationary on the rotos so it is easier to follow along. ua-cam.com/video/_9takZDTW_c/v-deo.html Also; I'm going to leave another web address here that you may or may not already know as It's also in this video's description. It is alanvista.com and it has a plug-in there that is called Royotoms which is a sample of the Rototoms in this video. I'm not too savvy about all the midi stuff as I've been mostly acoustic my whole life but as I understand it, you can download these rotos to your preferred midi device. We had spent a lot of hours communicating remotely with me sending lots of samples of each individual tom with and without reverb so the user can have as much control over the samples on their own equipment as possible. Check them out if you haven't already. Sorry for the delayed response. I have been away from home for a few weeks. I saw your response but wanted to wait till I was back and had time to write. Looking forward to any links you send. I would love to hear your work. One thing great about the art of music (or any art) It doesn't matter how you get it out there. As long as you get it out there, you express yourself to others.

      @@Robocomofo Hello my friend and thank you for your reply. I've been on quite a journey down various rabbits holes since we last spoke, and a change of equipment: I would have given myself a thumb issue with the kick on the finger drum; it also had a faulty battery. I got, and returned, other equipment.; however my journey has lead me to an Akai APC64, arriving tomorrow. Thank you so much for the VST link, I had already found that. It's going to take some time to learn the equipment and software (Ableton Live Lite 12) however one day I will get to the point of being able to play the rototom intro. I will post it one day, it's possible that other stuff will appear first, I have some ideas flowing, one germ of an idea that I'm really excited about. Thank you so much for your support and encouragement. It means a lot to me.

    As a lover of this song, and a person with NO drum skills, I find it absolutely incredible that Nick Mason created this amazing, iconic, EPIC drum section. As a non-drummer, the timing, rhythm, beat of this is a level not known to mortal men!! How did he choose to hit those drums at those specific beats?? Brilliance !!

    • @Robocomofo

      It's been a long time since I've read about it, but there was some article on creating the intro and how they found a couple of Roto Toms lying around the studio and proceeded to play around with them, recording a couple drums at a time then re-tuning them to lay more and more tracks with different notes. That I can tell, there are 9 different notes in the intro so they would've had to lay at least 5 different tracks to cover all them notes, if they only had 2 roto toms.

    The intro always seemed as if it was meant to sound like the soundtrack/scene from a western or something, like a Mexican standoff, with the clippody clop back and forth beat reminding you of the slow gallop of a cowboy's horse. Was that their intention? I assume it was, or am I just hearing something thats not there, and reading too much into it? I've never heard the official story on the making of the song.

    • @Robocomofo
      @Robocomofo 10 місяців тому

      The clippody clop you hear is supposed to be the Tick-Tock of a clock. It is actually played by Roger Waters on the Bass Guitar which is why it has more of a muffled underwater kind of sound.

    Where do you get a mounting for rototoms like that?

    • @Robocomofo
      @Robocomofo Рік тому

      I had to customize a little bit. I've actually had several variations of mounting systems for them over the years. This variation is probably the least sturdy but is the most portable. It's all on one double braced pearl cymbal/Tom stand with a double Tom mount. The tom mount is on side-ways so the posts that it supports are front to back instead of side by side. The pole supporting the top rack is in the back and lower rack up front. The whole set up with stand and roto's fits in one 40" rolling duffle bag. This is without having to remove the roto's from the roto tracks. It's about as quick to set up as a ride cymbal and a half. One other thing. The longest roto track available was still not long enough for the top rack and I had to add some adaptors on the end for the outer toms. They were a special adaptor remo made that I think I ended up getting off ebay but all they were, was a flat piece of steel with some holes drilled in them. Two holes to bolt in the track and one for the roto to bolt to.
